Dimethyl imidazolidinone in combination with either retinol or retinyl ester resulted in a synergistic enhancement in keratinocyte proliferation and synergistic inhibition of keratinocyte differentiation. The effects of the retinol or retinyl esters in combination with dimethyl imidazolidinone were analogous to treatment with retinoic acid.
Melinamide in combination with retinol or retinyl ester resulted in a synergistic enhancement in keratinocyte proliferation. The effects of the retinol or retinyl esters in combination with melinamide were analogous to treatment with retinoic acid.
The external skin care composition of the present invention comprises N-acetylglucosamine and at least one member selected from the group consisting of retinoid and pro-vitamin A.
The external skin care composition of the present invention has an effect of promoting the production of epidermal hyaluronic acid and can retain firmness and moisture of the skin.

A method of providing a topical base composition for use in the preparation of a topical skin care composition, comprising:
(a) providing a cosmetic container;
(b) providing in the container an effective amount of a fatty acid material having a melting point in the range of 40°C to 80°C; and a nonionic surfactant; this mixture being essentially anhydrous;
(c) providing sufficient heated water to the container such that substantially all of the fatty acid material is solubilised to provide a fatty acid/nonionic surfactant base mixture;
(d) agitating the contents of the container;
whereby a cream or lotion base is formed.
