  Synthesis of 2-hydroxy(methoxy)-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acids was developed. Based on their reactions with o-aminophenols we prepared for the first time 4,4'-bis[5-alkyl(aryl)benzoxazol-2-yl]-2-hydroxy-(alkoxy)biphenyls, which might be of interest as luminescent dyes. Hydroxy compounds in a salt form possess abnormally high Stokes shift.

  Processes are provided for preparing complexes of 2,3,5,6-tetraaminotoluene with an aromatic diacid where the aromatic diacid is insoluble in water under ambient conditions. An integrated process design starting with nitration of 2,6-dihalotoluene eliminates costly intermediate drying and recrystallization steps.   Photolabile groups can be incorporated into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and then quantitatively cleaved following MOF formation. Here, a 2-nitrobenzyl ether prevents lattice interpenetration (catenation) in a cubic MOF derived from zinc(II). Subsequent photolysis unmasks a hydroxyl group, and produces an open MOF that cannot be synthesized directly.
