n-butyllithium has been used for regiospecific substitution in the 2-position by reaction with n-buty iodide, N,N-dimethylformamide, sulfur, selenium and tellurium. The intermediate thiolates, selenolates and tellurolates have been converted into bicyclic compounds by addition of a mixture of t-butyl alcohol and hexamethylphosphoric triamide.
