A Novel, Efficient, and Selective Cleavage of Acetals Using Bismuth(III) Chloride

Treatment of acetals with bismuth(III) chloride in methanol provides a simple, convenient and chemoselective process for deprotection, and the parent aldehyde or ketone was obtained in high yield. The acetals have been cleaved selectively in the presence of silyl, benzyl and tetrahydropyranyl ethers.
Structurally different carbonyl compounds were converted into their corresponding cyclic acetals using polyaniline-sulfate salt as catalyst in dry toluene in excellent yield. In turn, useful deacetalization in aqueous medium was demonstrated. Chemoselective protection of carbonyl compounds was also demonstrated. The advantages of the polyaniline-sulfate salt are ease of preparation and handling, stability, reusability and activity.

A 1:1 molar ratio of the cobalt and manganese salts of p -amino benzoic acid supported on silica gel is an effective catalyst for the oxidation of various organic compounds in reasonable yields using molecular oxygen. The catalyst can be reused several times.

efficiently in the absence of solvents at room temperature. Over-oxidation of the products has not been observed in these reactions. A synergic effect of N2O4 upon the oxidation abilities of metal nitrates is observed.

Excellent yields were realized for a wide range of both aliphatic and aromatic substrates.
