5-Acylamino-4-amino-6-arylsulfanylpyrimidines were formed by the reaction 3-arylsulfanyl-2-acylamino-3-chloroacrylonitriles with benzamidine. The products were converted into new derivatives of 6-arylsulfanyl-substituted purine bases by treatment with polyphosphoric acid.

Enamidonitriles of the general formula Cl(X)C=C(CN)NHCOR readily react with methyl sulfanylacetate to give tri- or tetra-substituted thiophenes, which can be converted into new functional derivatives of thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine and thieno[3,4-d]imidazole.

Addition products of carboxylic acid amides and trichloroacetaldehyde are readily converted into 3-arylsulfanyl-2-acylamino-3-chloroacrylonitriles which react with hydrazine hydrate to afford 3(5)-amino-5(3)-arylsulfanyl-4-acylaminopyrazoles. The presence of an amidine fragment in the latter makes them capable of undergoing cyclocondensations with β-dicarbonyl compounds and ethyl cyanoacetate.
