The present invention provides compounds according to Formula (I): or pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates, esters, prodrugs, tautomers, and isomers thereof, wherein: ring A, n, q, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, each R7, each R7A, and R8 are each selected independently of each other and as defined herein. The invention also provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds (optionally in combination with one or more additional active ingredients), and methods for their use in treating or preventing a wide range of cancers.

Nickel-catalyzed intramolecularcyclization of cyclohexa-1,3-dienes and an aldehyde in a chain produced fused, bridged or spiro bicyclic skeletons depending on the length of the tether. This chemistry can be extended to cyclohepta-1,3-dienes and cyclohepta-1,3,5-trienes having an aldehyde moiety on the side chain.

Intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction (IMDA) precursors are easily available starting from addition of ester functionalized zinc-copper reagents to cyclohexadienyl- and cycloheptadienylirontricarbonyl cation salts.
