Abstract Experimental dipole moments and infinite-dilution Kerr constants are reported for 2-pivaloylfuran, 2-pivaloylthiophen and 2-pivaloylpyrrole (Me 3 C·CO·C 4 H 3 X; X = O, S, NH) as solutes in carbon tetrachloride. Analysis of the results yields the effective dihedral angles and the percentage abundances of the XO- cis conformers as X = O, 15 ± 15°, 23 ± 10%; X = S, 27 ± 10°, 70 ± 20%; and X
