Hydrated lanthanoid(III) chlorides react with salts of dithiophosphinic acids in hot ethanolic solution to form the corresponding neutral tris or anionic tetrakis complexes, [Ln(S2PR2)3](R = C6H11) and [Ln(S2PR2)4]–(R = Me, OEt, or C6H11) respectively.
