studies of the reactions of Kr2+ and Xe2+ ions with several molecular gases, M, showed that ions of the type KrM+ and XeM+ are produced. We have continued these studies and observed that the latter ions rapidly react with M in “switching” reactions generating M2+ dimer ions. Thus dimer ions such as (CH4)2+ and (H2O)2+ are formed which are not formed in the reactions of parent ions M+ (e.g. CH4+ and H2O+)

H2CO and H2C2O2. The IR absorption frequencies of the CO species were measured by an FTIR spectrometer. In solid Ar, the CO monomer was seen to absorb at 2138.5 cm−1 and (CO)2 at 2136.6 cmt-1.
