Oral secretion of beet armyworm caterpillars (BAW), when applied to damaged tissues of corn seedlings, induces the seedlings to emit volatile compounds that attract the natural enemies of the caterpillars. The key elicitor present in BAW oral secretions is N-[17-hydroxylinolenoyl]-L-glutamine (volicitin). Analysis of the oral secretion showed that it also contained N-[17-hydroxyolinoleoyl]-L-glutamine, free 17-hydroxylinolenic, and 17-hydroxylinoleic acid, the glutamine conjugates of linolenic and linoleic acid as well as free linolenic and linoleic acid. Here we present the identification and synthesis of the hydroxy acids and of glutamine conjugates.

(EN) The invention relates to fatty acids conjugated to amino acids and their derivatives that elicit the production and/or release of plant volatiles compounds which attract and/or retain beneficial insects and deter herbivorous insect feeding. These conjugates also induce plants to increase production of pharmacologically important compounds such as taxol, increase fragrance of flowers, and increase production of plant essential oil.
Verification of the versatility of the in vitro enzymatic reaction giving (+)-cis-12-Oxo-phytodienoic acid
the biosynthetic intermediates in this pathway. The reported stereo selective total synthesis of cis-(+)-OPDA is not very efficient due to the many steps involved in the reaction as well as the use of water sensitive reactions. Therefore, we developed an enzymatic method for the synthesis of OPDA using acetonepowder of flax seed and allene oxide cyclase (PpAOC2) from Physcomitrella patens. From this
