A practical method for the direct preparation of diphenylmethyl (DPM) esters from 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine is described. The reaction was readily performed in the presence of a catalytic amount of boron trifluoride-diethyl etherate at room temperature. Using this reaction protocol, various carboxylic acids were converted to DPM esters with high yields. This method is highly effective for the protection

has been developed for the synthesis of diphenylmethyl (DPM) esters from 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine. Various carboxylic acids readily reacted with 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine in the presence of FeCl3 as a catalyst to provide the desired DPM esters with high yields. The procedure is facile and enables effective synthesis of a variety of esters for the protection of carboxylic acids. Graphical Abstract

An anionic rearrangement of 2-benzyloxypyridine is described. Pyridine-directed metalation of the benzylic carbon leads to 1,2-migration of pyridine via a postulated associative mechanism (addition/elimination). Several aryl pyridylcarbinols were obtained in high yields. A formal synthesis of carbinoxamine, an antihistamine drug used for the treatment of seasonal allergies and hay fever, emerges from

e was developed. A variety of DPM ethers was successfully achieved with high yield via treatment of alcohols with 2-diphenylmethoxypyridine in the presence of catalytic FeCl3. The procedure is a practical and efficient synthetic procedure to protect various alcohols, and it can be applied to prepare bioactive compounds.
these anions with electrophiles. In particular, Kornblum's rationalization of the silver ion effect, one of the main pillars of the hard and soft acid/base concept of ambidentreactivity, has been revised. Ag(+) does not reverse the regioselectivity of the attack at the 2-pyridone anion by increasing the positive charge of the electrophile but by blocking the nitrogen atom of the 2-pyridone anion.
