A range of organic compounds have been tritiated (and in some cases deuteriated) via hydrogen isotope exchange reactions using polymer supported acid catalysts. The extent and regiospecificity of labeling were investigated as a function of substrate and catalyst type. Although all the catalysts were found to be active in the tritiation of both aromatic and heterocyclic compounds, there was clear evidence that the extent of hydrogen isotope exchange was influenced by the nature of the polymer support matrix.
