Orbital overlap constraints in the thermal rearrangement of 3,7-dimethylenetricyclo[4.1.0.02,4]heptane derivatives

The thermal rearrangements of the 1-ethyl- and 1-phenyl-3,7-dimethylenetricyclo[4. 1.0 2.4 ]heptanes 4-Et and 4-Ph to the corresponding 3-substituted 2,5-dimethylenebicyclo[4. 1.0]hept-3-enes 5-Et and 5-Pb have been examined. Pyrolysis of 4-Et over the temperature range 132.0-180.0 o C affords WEt as the only product in a first-order, gas-phase reaction with E a =35.9±0.8 kcal/mol and log A=13.9±0
