    An aqueous ink composition for ink jet printers, which gives reliable printing performance and yields printed images which have excellent print quality and which dry rapidly is disclosed. The ink compositions are suitable for printing on plain paper. The ink comprises water as the principal solvent, an anionic colorant, pectic acid, a base, and at least one of a penetrable solvent and/or a penetrability-imparting surfactant. The pectic acid is composed primarily of α-1,4 linked polygalacturonic acid having a degree of esterification not more than 5% where the degree of esterification is defined as the percentage of the total number of galacturonic acid units in the pectic acid which are esterified.

    An object of the present invention is to provide a medium; a specimen; a method for preparing the specimen; a method for observing the specimen; a sample cell; and an electron microscope capable of easily solving the problem of charge-up and further capable of observing a real shape or the like of a sample with a SEM, a TEM or the like. For the purpose of achieving the above-described object, the present invention uses an electrical conductivity-imparting liquid medium, for use in a microscope, which includes an ionic liquid as an essential component thereof and is impregnated into the entirety of a SEM or TEM sample or applied to the observation surface of a SEM or TEM sample to impart electrical conductivity at least to the observation surface of the sample. According to the present invention, the charge built up on the sample surface can be released simply by impregnating or coating the sample with the ionic liquid, and hence the problem of charge-up can be easily solved. Further, even when a sample impregnated or coated with the ionic liquid is placed under vacuum, the ionic liquid is not evaporated from the sample, and hence a biological sample can be observed as it is in an original shape.

  • Reductive amination agents: comparison of Na(CN)BH3 and Si-CBH

    Reductive amination is a chemical reaction commonly employed by organic chemists in academics and the pharmaceutical industry. In this reaction a carbonyl group is converted to an amine via an imine intermediate, the formation of which is rate limiting. A major reagent necessary for the completion of this reaction is a hydride source, commonly sodium cyanoborohydride (Na(CN)BH3). The objective of this research was to compare the efficacy of Na(CN)BH3 with silica-bound cyanoborohydride (Si-CBH) as hydride sources in reductive amination reactions. Work has shown that reactions employing Si-CBH as a hydride source showed significant improvement, exhibiting an average percent conversion 25% greater than reactions using Na(CN)BH3.
