    Compounds containing at least one keto group and at least one peroxy group, each peroxy oxygen being joined to a tertiary carbon atom. Examples: 2-Methyl-2-(t-butylperoxy)-4-pentanone. 2,6-Dimethyl-2,6-bis(t-butylperoxy)-4-heptanone. 3,5,5-Trimethyl-3-(t-butylperoxy)cyclohexanone. The compounds are prepared by the strong acid catalyzed addition of a tertiary hydroperoxide to an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated ketone. Illustration: Mesityl oxide and pinanyl hydroperoxide, in slight excess, were reacted at 0.degree. C. in the presence of 77% sulfuric acid; the reaction mix was stirred for 16 hours at 25.degree. C. Product 2-methyl-2-pinanyl-peroxy-4-pentanone was recovered.

The peroxide formulations may include, for example, one or more compounds selected from sulfur-containing compounds, organophosphite compounds, HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer) compounds, aliphatic allyl urethane compounds, and blends comprising nitroxides (e.g., 4-hydroxy-TEMPO) and quinones (e.g., mono-tert-butylhydroquinone).

    Embodiments of organic peroxide formulations provide longer scorch time protection and require fewer additives. The peroxide formulations may include, for example, at least one organic peroxide, at least one nitroxide-containing compound (e.g., 4-hydroxy-TEMPO), and at least one quinone-containing compound (e.g., mono-tert-butylhydroquinone). Embodiments of the present invention relate to organic peroxide compositions comprising scorch retarders. Embodiments of the invention also relate to crosslinkable elastomer compositions, processes for curing the elastomers, and products made by such processes.

    Medical devices comprise a polymeric body comprising: a base polymeric formulation comprising at least a polymer or co-polymer of propylene; and an additive comprising a copolymer having a polypropylene backbone and hybrid micromolecule side-chains based on organo-functional silanes (PP-g-XSiOA) in the presence of a co-agent, for example, difunctional metallic diacrylate monomers, where “X” is an organic group or an organo-functional group, and “A” is a metal, an inorganic oxide, an inorganic hydroxide, or any other inorganic material. X may be derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of epoxy, amino, acrylate, methacryloxy, and vinyl; and A is selected from the group consisting of: silicon, (Si), aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), tin (Sn); oxides thereof; hydroxides thereof; and mixtures of the foregoing. Antimicrobial agents are included in the polymeric body. The medical devices have enhanced antimicrobial properties.
