A palladium‐catalyzedoxidative vicinal diazidation of alkenes has been developed, in which TMSN3 was used as azide source. Both styrenes and unactivated alkenes are suitable for this reaction. A series of 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,4-diazepinium salts, which includes fused ring systems of known ring-junction configuration, has been prepared. A study of the spectral properties indicates that this ring system is largely planar and is sufficiently flexible to permit cis and trans fusion at the 2,3-bond to 5- or 6-membered rings without significant distortion.

A complete synthesis of enantiopure trans-cyclopentane-1,2-diamine and trans-cyclobutane-1,2-diamine is described. These diamines have been used as components of novel chiral salen ligands whose chromium and manganese complexes were then evaluated as oxygen transfer agents in the asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes.
