The oxidative free radical reactionsbetween 2-amino-1,4-naphthoquinones and β-dicarbonyl compounds mediated by cerium(IV) salts are described. In contrast to those mediated by manganese(III) acetate, the cerium(IV) mediated free radical reaction provides a novel method for the synthesis of benzo[f]indole-4,9-diones exclusively. (1S,5R)-(-)-Karahanaether (8,8-dimethyl-2-methylene-6-oxabi-cyclo[ 3.2.1]octane) and (1S,5R)-(-)-karahana lactone (8,8-dimethyl-2-methylene-6-oxabicyclo [3.2.1]octan-7-one) were synthesized from (S)-3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylcyclo-hexanone. The natural karahana lactone was shown to be almost racemic (ca. 1.3 % e.e.).
ABSTRACT Camphorquinone undergoes a novel unsensitized photo-oxidation in polar solvents such as alcohol under oxygen to give camphoricanhydride in 85% yield irradiated with a high-pressure mercury lamp. A possible mechanism is also presented in terms of results of experiment.
