A number of new 4-aryloxymethylene-2,3,5-trihydrothiopyrano[3,2-b]indoles are regioselectively synthesized in 78-84% yield by the thio-Claisenrearrangement of 3-(4′-aryloxybut-2′-ynylthio)indoles. The endocyclic double bonded products are isolated by introducing electron withdrawing acetyl group at the indole nitrogen and also can be converted to the corresponding exocyclic isomers by deacetylation

The invention concerns novel heterocyclic nitromethane derivatives of the formula 1 as defined hereinafter (and their non-toxic salts) wherein the heterocyclic moiety Q may bear a wide variety of optional substituents, together with pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The nitromethane derivatives are inhibitors of the enzyme aldose reductase and are of value in the treatment of certain complications of diabetes and galactosemia. The invention further concerns novel processes for the manufacture and use of said inhibitors.
Synthesis and characterization of novel indole-containing half-crowns as new emissive metal probes

Two new indole derivatives have been synthesized by a one-pot procedure and their potential as fluorescence probes for metal ions was investigated. The sensor capability of 1 and 2 toward cations such as Ag+, Cu2+ Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2- was studied in dichloromethane solution by absorption, fluorescence emission, and H-1 NMR titrations. Both probes showed selectivity for Ag+ and Hg2+ ions. The results suggest that these compounds may serve as promising models for future design of novel and more potent sensors. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
