    A new and efficient method for the preparation of tri- and difluoromethylsilanes using magnesium metal-mediated reductive tri- and difluoromethylation of chlorosilanes is reported using tri- and difluoromethyl sulfides, sulfoxides, and sulfones.     An efficient method is disclosed for the preparation of trifluoromethyl- and difluoromethylsilanes using magnesium metal mediated reductive tri- and difluoromethylation of chlorosilanes with tri- and difluoromethyl sulfides, sulfoxides, and sulfones. One byproduct of the process is diphenyl disulfide. Since phenyl trifluoromethyl sulfone, sulfoxide and sulfide are readily prepared from readily available trifluoromethane and diphenyl disulfide, the method can be considered “pseudo-catalytic” for the preparation of (trifluoromethyl)trimethylsilane from environmentally benign trifluoromethane.

    A novel bifunctional trifluoromethylsilyl reagent (BTR), Me2(CH2Cl)SiCF3 is prepared, which enables ketone trifluoromethylations with excellent enantioselectivity and broad scope. Notably, by taking advantage of the chloromethyl group, a tandem synthesis of chiral trifluoromethylated oxasilacyclopentanes and α-CF3 tertiary alcohols with vicinal tertiary or quaternary stereocenters was developed.

    CF <sub>3</sub> from Fluoroform

    Fluoroform (CF 3 H) is a by-product from the manufacture of fluorocarbon-based materials used, for example, in nonstick coatings and refrigerants. Fluoroform's potency as a greenhouse gas is a growing concern as supplies continue to accumulate. In this context, Prakash et al. (p. 1324 ; see the Perspective by Haufe ) show that fluoroform can be used to transfer CF 3 to silicon, sulfur, and carbon centers in the development of CF 3 -bearing pharmaceutical and agrochemical structures.
