Various oxiranes reacted with carbon dioxide at 100 °C using lithium bromide as a catalyst under atmospheric pressure to afford the corresponding five-membered cyclic carbonates quantitatively. An investigation of catalysts for atmospheric pressure carbon dioxide insertion into epoxides under electrosynthetic conditions is reported. Careful selection of electrode materials, enabled a catalyst free system to be developed.
