An efficient synthesis of N-hydroxy or alkoxy-alpha-aminocarboxylic acids and N-(tert-butyl sulfinyl)-alpha-amino carboxylic acids has been developed from N,O-alkyl or hydroxylamines and tert-butyl sulfinamide utilizing a Petasis boronic acid-Mannich reaction.
