The phytochemical investigation of members of the genus Protea afforded a series of polyphenolic compounds (1-5) that were identified by 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Of these, 2-5 are new compounds. Chemical syntheses of 1-3 were performed in order to confirm the structures and to prepare additional material for biological evaluation.
Stereoselective Syntheses of (-)-Podorhizol Lignan and its Derivatives:<i>erythro</i>and<i>threo</i>Preferential Aldol Condensation of Potassium Enolate from γ-Butyrolactone with Alkoxybenzaldehyde
(-)-Podorhizol (1) was stereoselectively synthesized by erythro preferential aldol condensation of 3,4,5-trimethoxy- benzaldehyde with potassium enolate from (+)-(R)-3- (3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl)-4-butanolide (2) (erythro:threo=85:15). Erythro selectivity was observed in the aldol condensation of many alkoxybenzaldehydes with potassium enolate from (+)-γ-butyrolactone 2. However, benzaldehydes having methoxy groups at both the 2 and 6 positions gave threo selectivity in the aldol condensation with potassium enolate from (+)-γ-butyrolactone 2.

Tetra-O-alkyl ethers of 1,2-O-isopropylidene-myo-inositol are converted into 1,2,4-trialkoxybenzenes on treatment with potassium t-butoxide in dimethyl sulphoxide at 80°. An intermediate product in the conversion of 3,4,5,6-tetra-O-benzyl-1,2-O-isopropylidene-myo-inositol into 1,2,4-trisbenzyloxybenzene was isolated. The main phenolic by-products in the O-benzylation of 1,2,4-trihydroxy- or 1,2,4-triacetoxybenzene to 1,2,4-tribenzyloxybenzene have been identified as due to incomplete O-benzylation and C-benzylation. In addition, dibenzyldimethyl-ammonium chloride is formed from DMF and benzyl chloride. The main factors controlling these reactions paths are discussed. An efficient procedure for preparing 1,2,4-tribenzyloxybenzene using NaH in DMF is reported.

A wavelength conversion member including a wavelength conversion layer comprising a quantum dot, wherein the wavelength conversion layer includes an organic matrix, and the organic matrix contains a polymer and one or more of compounds selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formula (1) and the like; and a quantum dot-containing polymerizable composition containing a quantum dot, a radical polymerizable compound, and one or more of compounds selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formula (1) and the like are provided.
The wavelength conversion member has an excellent light resistance and the composition has an excellent photocurability which enables a production of a wavelength conversion member containing a quantum dot which has a less tendency to lower its light emission intensity.
