The synthesis of a range of substitutedbiphenyl-4-carboxylicacids and 4-aminobiphenyls is described. Preparations are included for the parent biphenyl-4-carboxylicacid, and for 4-biphenylylaceticacid and three substituted4-biphenylylaceticacids.

t-Butyl thionitrate have been found to be an excellent diazotizing reagent of arylamines in aprotic nonpolar media, affording eventually such products as aryl chlorides, aryl bromides, aryl iodides, biphenyls, and aryl methyl sulfides in the presence of CCl4, CHBr3, I2, benzene, and dimethyl disulfide, respectively, via extrusion of N2.

A gold-catalysed coupling of aryldiazoniumsalts with arylboronic acids is described. The reactions proceed in satisfactory yields under irradiation with blue LEDs in the presence of KF and a catalytic amount of ascorbic acid. Notably, 4-nitrobenzendiazonium tetrafluoroborate is sufficiently reactive to undergo the coupling with a variety of arylboronic acids in the absence of aryl radical initiators

Using one atomic equivalent of iodine, the title reaction gives 3,4-benzocoumarins. The reaction appears to be an electrophilic cyclisation but there is evidence that the initial complex may decompose homolytically to a minor extent.
