X-Ray analysis of 1-phospha-1,2,3-butatriene as a ligand of carbonyltungsten complex

X-Ray analysis was carried out of 4,4-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl)-1-phospha-1,2,3-butatriene as a ligand of pentacarbonyltungsten complex. The heterocumulene system was found to be planar with a rod framework coordinating to the tungsten metal at the phosphorus atom in a sigma-type coordination.

By reaction of lambda5-phosphabutatrienes (4, n = 2) and lambda5-phosphaallenes (4, n = 1) with (2,4,6-tri-tert-butyl)phenylmonochlorophosphane 2 the title compounds are formed.
The reaction of dichlorocarbene with 4,4-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl)-1-phosphabutatriene gave 2-dichloromethylene-3-diphenylmethylene-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl)-1-phosphirane via 2,2-dichloro-3-(2,2-diphenylethenylidene)-1-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl)-1-phosphirane.
Dichlorocarbene reacted with stericallyprotected 1-phosphaallene and 1,3-diphosphaallene to give a methylene-phosphirane and a methylene-diphosphirane, respectively; the former phosphirane was converted to 1-phosphabutatriene with butyllithium and the structure of the latter diphosphirane was determined by X-ray crystallography.
