The present invention relates to new heteroaromatic compounds having two-photon absorption activity. According to the invention, said compounds are suitable for use as optical power limiting agents via two-photon absorption or for use as imaging agents with two-photon absorbing activity for application in two-photon laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy. Compositions including said compounds and intermediates for their preparations are also within the scope of the present invention.

Pyrid‐2‐ylidenes are trapped in solution by [Ru3(CO)12] after being formed by deprotonation of N‐substituted pyridinium cations. The great basicity of these NHC ligands and the polynuclear character of the ruthenium cluster trigger room temperature orthometalation of the initial κ1‐C2‐pyrid‐2‐ylidene ligands, leading to unprecedented face‐capping κ2‐C2,C3‐pyrid‐3‐yl‐2‐ylidene ligands.

The present invention is directed to a method of providing a thermally curable coating composition for to provide positive photoresists layers, underlayers for multiple layer resists, antireflective coatings, bottom layer antireflective coatins, dielectric layers, photoresist layers, hard mask etch stops, in the manufacture of integrated circuits. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a method of using a thermally activable latent acid or a thermal acid generator, a N-benzylpyridinium or N-benzylanilinium salt of a strong acid, as a catalyst in a polymerizable composition suitable for preparing such coatings and layers. The present invention is also directed to novel compositions comprising benzylpyridinium and benzylanilinium salts of a strong acid, such as sulfonic acid or disulfonic acid as thermal acid generators.
