Synthesis of 9,10-dihydro-4H-benzo [4,5] cyclohepta[ 1,2-b] thiophene-4one, a key pharmaceutical intermediate was described by two different routes. The formation of Cannizzaro reaction products was observed in first route. Wittig-Horner reaction conditions were utilized in the second route to obtain the title compound in good yield.
