  4-Pivaloylaminobenzyl (PAB) group is a new benzyl-type protecting group which can be introduced either by initial introduction of 4-nitrobenzyl group followed by reduction and N-acylation or by the reaction of a hydroxyl compound with the corresponding halogenide or trichloroacetimidate. PAB ethers have higher acid stability than 4-methoxybenzyl ethers but are readily cleaved with DDQ in a manner similar to the latter.

  An atom-economical and solvent-free catalytic procedure for the mono-3-alkylation of oxindole with alcohols is described. The reaction is mediated by the in situ generated catalyst from RuCl3·xH2O and PPh3 in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The reactions proceed in good to excellent yields with a wide range of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic alcohols.

  Trifluoroethylarenes are found in a variety of biologically active molecules, and strategies for accessing this substructure are important for developing therapeutic candidates and biological probes. Trifluoroethylarenes can be directly accessed via nucleophilic trifluoromethylation of benzylic electrophiles; however, current catalytic methods do not effectively transform electron-deficient substrates and heterocycles. To address this gap, we report a Cu-catalyzed decarboxylative trifluoromethylation of benzylic bromodifluoroacetates. To account for the tolerance of sensitive functional groups, we propose an inner-sphere mechanism of decarboxylation.
