    Copolymers comprising: (a) 60 to 99% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of N-vinyllactams, N-vinylamides, and mixtures thereof; (1) 1 to 40% by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl esters of aliphatic branched C 8 -C 30 -carboxylic acids; (c) 0 to 30% by weight of vinyl acetate; and (d) 0 to 39% by weight of at least one additional free-radically copolymnerizable monomer; wherein the % by weight content of components (a), (b), (c) and (d) totals 100%, and with the proviso that the total amount of component (b) and component (c) combined is 1 to 40% by weight based on the copolymer, are described along with methods of using such copolymers to solubilize substances which are insoluble in water, substances which are only sparingly soluble in water, and combinations thereof.

    nickel‐catalyzed CH bond functionalization process with the assistance of a bidentate directing group. The reaction favors the CH bonds of β‐methyl groups over the γ‐methyl or β‐methylene groups. Additionally, a predominant preference for the β‐methyl CH bonds over the aromatic sp2 CH bonds was observed. Moreover, this process also allows for the effective functionalization of benzylic secondary sp3 CH bonds

    A semi-continuous process is provided for selective formation of a vinyl ester by reactive distillation from a corresponding carboxylic acid. Carboxylic acid, vinyl acetate, and a palladium acetate—bidentate ligand catalyst complex are provided and reacted in a typical embodiment. Acetic acid and vinyl acetate are continuously removed from the reaction mixture and vinyl acetate is recycled to the reaction mixture. The vinyl ester product is separated from the vinyl acetate, residual carboxylic acid, residual acetic acid, and catalyst.

    Method for making a solvent-containing coating material comprising 5 to 70% by weight of at least one mixture of substances (A). The mixture of substances is obtained by copolymerizing in at least one hydroxy-group containing reactive diluent a mixture (A1) of olefinically unsaturated monomers that contain a1) 1 to 90% by weight, based on mixture (A1), of at least one cycloaliphatic monomer and a2) 0 to 90% by weight, based on mixture (A1), of at least one hydroxy-group containing monomer. The coating material further contains 5 to 70% by weight of at least one hydroxy-group containing polyaddition resin (polyadduct) (B) with a M n of 800 to 3,500 and 5 to 70% by weight of at least one cross-linking agent (C) for thermally cross-linking the material. The weight of A, B, and C are based on the solid content of the coating material.

    A well bore treatment fluid and methods for selectively reducing the outflow of water during recovery of hydrocarbons from a hydrocarbon reservoir in a formation are described, wherein fluid contains 5 to 40 weight per cent of a dissolved compound based on α-branched carboxylic acid, derivatives or co-polymers thereof, and capable of forming a precipitate that is substantially soluble in hydrocarbons and substantially insoluble in water.
