    1,2-Cyclohexanediones were found to be dioxygenated by molecular oxygen with the aid of cupric ion to afford 1,5-keto acids and carbon monoxide. The reaction proceeds possibly via an endoperoxide intermediate. Methyl α-hydroxyadipates were also formed as byproducts. The mechanism of oxygenation is discussed.

    The biotransformation of alkylcycloalkanediones using suspension plant cultured-cells of Caragana chamlagu gave oxo carboxylic acids by oxidative cleavage. 5,6-Dioxoheptanoic acid was obtained in high yield (95%) in a short time (7 h) from 2-methyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione. However, 1,2- and 1,4-cycloalkanediones were reduced stereoselectively and trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol and trans-1,4-cyclohexanediol were obtained, respectively. The mechanism of the oxidative cleavage of alkylcycloalkanediones is also discussed.

    The base-catalyzed autoxidation of diosphenol was catalyzed by cationic micelles with a remarkable selectivity to give an 1,5-keto acid by a mechanism analogous to the oxygenation of quercetin or 3-hydroxyflavones.

Under cigarette smoking conditions, a combustible filler and/or paper wrapper additive such as 4'-formyl-2'-methoxyphenyl 5-hydroxy-2-isopropylhexanoate pyrolyzes into vanillin and 2-isopropyl-5-hydroxyhexanoic acid delta lactone flavorants as volatile components of the cigarette smoke.
