sequential, one-electron reductions to form the ions [C120O]n- where n is −1 to −6. The first two reductions of C120O occur at potentials that are close to that for the reduction of C60 to [C60]- and it appears that the two electrons are added successively to each of the two fullerene cages. Similarly, the second two reductions of C120O occur at potentials that are close to the reduction potential for the
At ambient temperature and in the solid state C60 degrades to C120O which is present in up to ca. 1% concentration in each of thirteen differently sourced samples examined; traces of C120O2 have also been detected.

C120OS has been synthesised by thermal reaction of C120O and sulfur, isolated by HPLC, and characterised by MALDI-TOF-MS, LT-FAB-MS, XPS, Raman, UV-VIS, IR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy; all data are consistent with a molecule of Cs symmetry with the fullerene cages linked by furan- and thiophene-like bridging units.
