    A novel and facile synthesis of substituted 2,3-dihydro-1,4-dithiins and 6,7-dihydro-5H-1,4-dithiepins based on the reactions of α-bromo/hydroxy ketones with α-oxo ketene cyclic dithioacetals has been developed. A general mechanism for the reactions is proposed.

    The iododecarboxylation reactions of alpha-carboxy ketene dithioacetals were presented. The alpha-iodo ketene dithioacetals 3 and alpha,alpha-diiodo ketene dithioacetals 4 were prepared in excellent yields simply from reactions of alpha-carboxy ketene dithioacetals 2 with iodine in aqueous media.

    2,4-Pyrrolidinedione derivatives were synthesized in 67-85% yield in one-pot reaction via base-catalyzed cyclization of α-(arylvinylcarbonyl)-α'-(N-arylaminocarbonyl)ketene dithioacetals formed in situ by the reaction of α-acetyl-α'-(N-arylaminocarbonyl)ketene dithioacetals with pyridinecarboxlaldehydes or benzaldehydes containing electron-withdrawing substituents.

    A novel domino annulation strategy for the construction of benzo[b]thiophenes has been developed. In the presence of Cs2CO3 and Ag2CO3, a wide range of alpha-alkenoyl-alpha-alkynyl ketene dithioacetals readily react with cyanoacetates in CH3CN at 110 degrees C under N-2 to afford multisubstituted benzo[b]thiophenes efficiently via tandem thien- and benzannulations. A plausible mechanism is also proposed.
