A highly efficient [8 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of azaheptafulvenes with α-chloro aliphatic aldehydes enabled by N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis is presented, delivering cis-cycloheptatriene-fused γ-lactams with good yields, moderate to good diastereoselectivies, and excellent enantioselectivies.
