Acid chlorides react with SmI2 to give α-diketones. Various experiments show that the initially formed acyl radical is rapidly transformed into an acyl anion which is thus generated by quite an unusual route.

Acid chlorides react with esters in the presence of samarium diiodide and catalytic amounts of NiI2 to afford samarium enediolates which can further react with electrophiles such as water or aldehydes to give respectively alpha-ketols or alpha-dihydroxyketones.
