    The present disclosure discloses a method for preparing dimethyl carbonate, comprising the following steps: contacting a raw material comprising ethylene carbonate and methanol with a catalyst to produce the dimethyl carbonate; wherein the catalyst comprises an ionic liquid with an anion and a cation, and the cation has a structure represented by Formula I or Formula II. In the method for preparing dimethyl carbonate, a series of ionic liquids with strong alkalinity is developed and used in the transesterification reaction of ethylene carbonate and methanol to synthesize dimethyl carbonate and ethylene glycol. The ionic liquids exhibit extremely high reactivity. A reaction equilibrium is reached when the reaction is carried out at a temperature ranging from 68°C to70°C for 5 min even with 0.3 wt% catalyst, and the catalyst still exhibits certain catalytic activity even at 0°C.

    The present disclosure discloses a homogeneous catalyst comprising an ionic liquid with an anion and a cation, wherein the anion and the cation both comprises a nitrogen-containing heterocycle, wherein the cation has a structure represented by Formula I or Formula II, and the anion has a structure represented by Formula III, Formula IV or Formula V. The present disclosure further provides a heterogeneous catalyst comprising the homogeneous catalyst, a preparation method and use of the homogeneous catalyst and the heterogeneous catalyst. The homogeneous catalyst and heterogeneous catalyst are used to synthesize high-purity ethyl methyl carbonate product by the transesterification of dimethyl carbonate and ethanol, transesterification of dimethyl carbonate and diethyl carbonate, or transesterification of methanol and diethyl carbonate, and exhibit high reaction activity wherein a reaction equilibrium can be reached when the reaction time is 5 min and the reaction temperature is in a range from 76°C to 78°C, and the both catalysts show high catalytic activity even at near room temperature 30°C. The synthesized ionic liquids exhibit substantially unchanged catalytic activity and show higher stability, even after reused 20 times.

    The use of carbon dioxide in the synthesis of chemicals, such as dimethyl carbonate (DMC), constitutes an environmentally attractive alternative to hazardous and toxic reagents. However, the direct synthesis of DMC from methanol and CO2 is characterized by low yields due to the reaction equilibrium and the thermodynamic limitations (Delta G(298K)(0) = + 26.3 kj/mol). Alkoxide ionic liquids possessing alkylimidazolium and benzalkonium cations were prepared, characterised and tested together with ZrO2-MgO catalyst for the synthesis of DMC from methanol and CO2. By using the novel ionic liquid as additives, ca. 12% conversion of methanol, and 90% selectivity to DMC was obtained at 120 A degrees C and 7.5 MPa. The water abstracting potential of the ionic liquids influenced the conversion of methanol and the selectivity to DMC. The alkoxide ionic liquids were recovered and reused in DMC synthesis without loss in activity and selectivity.
