When alkyl glycidyl ethers derived from epichlorohydrin and alcohols were treated with sodium cyanide, the corresponding γ-alkoxy-β-hydroxybutyronitriles (I) were obtained. The hydrolysis of I with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, followed by acidification and distillation, gave γ-alkoxy-γ-butyrolactones (II).
