Brönstedacid-catalyzed one-pot synthesis of indoles from o-aminobenzyl alcohols and furans has been developed. This method operates via the in situ formation of aminobenzylfuran, followed by its recyclization into the indole core. The method proved to be efficient for substrates possessing different functional groups, including −OMe, −CO2Cy, and −Br. The resulting indoles can easily be transformed
synthesis of 2-substitutedfurans via palladium- and iron-catalyzed coupling utilizing 2-bromofuran is described. Whereas palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling effectively provided the corresponding aryl furans, little or no product was obtained by palladium-catalyzed coupling with various alkyl nucleophiles. Iron-catalyzed coupling proved effective for the synthesis of primary and secondary alkyl furans in modest

conditions, besides the normal functional group tolerance known for palladium-catalyzed reactions, an interesting selectivity was observed with functional groups that are known to react either in palladium-catalyzed reactions or reactions catalyzed by other transition-metals. Thus aryl halides, terminal alkynes, 1,6-enynes, and alpha-allenic alcohols were tolerated. In the latter example the selective reaction

Polymer-catalyst tranducers and their use for detecting one or more constituents in a sample are disclosed. Changes in conductivity of the polymercatalyst transducers as a result of electron density changes are measured to provide an indication of a particular constituent present in the sample. Such conductivity changes can be measured using a conductivity meter. The polymer-catalyst tranducers are particularly useful for the determination of glucose in whole blood.
Oxabenzonorbornadienes are valuable synthetic intermediates because they can serve as a general template with which to create highly substituted ring systems. However, to date, only very few C1-substituted oxabenzonorbornadienes have been reported. In this study, the synthesis of some C1-substituted oxabenzonorbornadienes was achieved by the Diels-Alder reaction between 2-substituted furans and benzyne. Moderate to good yields (16-80%) of the Diels-Alder reactions were observed. These C1-substituted oxabenzonorbornadienes will find applications as valuable synthetic intermediates and should be useful in studies of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions.
