The reaction of [Fe(CO)2(PPh3)2(η2-CS2)] with two equivalents of [Co(η-C5H5)(PPh3)2] gives [Co(η-C5H5)}2Fe(CO)2(L)}(μ3-S)(μ3-CS)] (L=PPh3) as the sole product in good yield. Under the same conditions, [Fe(CO)2(L)2(η2-CS2Me)][SO3CF3] gives [Co(η-C5H5)}2Fe(CO)2(L)}(μ3-S)(μ3-CSMe)][SO3CF3]. The PPh3 ligand of [Co(η-C5H5)}2Fe(CO)2(L)}(μ3-S)(μ3-CS)] (L=PPh3) may be replaced by P(OPh)3 and P(OMe)3

The thermolysis of [Fe(L)2(CO)2(η2-CS2)] complexes (1) in refluxing benzene gives the blue tetrathiolene derivatives [Fe2(L)4(CO)2(C2S4)] (2) when L = P(OPh)3, P(OEt)3, P(OPri)3, PPh(OEt)2, PPh2(OEt). 2 are formed only when the phosphorus(III) ligands L readily dissociate from 1 and have cone angles between 109° and 133°. The two most stable are 2a L = P(OPh)3, cone angle 128°} and 2c L = P(OPri)3

Reaction of Fe(CO)2(η2-CS2){P(OR)3}2 with phosphines: desulphurization versus substitution. Crystal structures of Fe(CO)2(CS){P(OPh)3}2 and Fe(CO)3{P(OPh)3}2
desulphurization of Fe(CO)2(η2-CS2)P(OR)3}2 by PBu3 in polar solvents is not a general route to Fe(CO)2(CS)P(OR)3}2 for all R, the new compound Fe(CO)2(CS)P(OEt)3}2 has been obtained and characterised spectroscopically.
