A mild, general, and efficient method for the synthesis of 2-monosubstituted and 2,5-disubstitutedfurans via the CuI-catalyzed cycloisomerization of alkynyl ketones was developed. It was demonstrated that furans containing both acid- and base-labile groups could be easily synthesized using this methodology. A plausible mechanism for this transformation is proposed.

E- and Z-Enediones are easily accessible by controlled oxidation of 2,5-disubstituted furans with Mo(CO)6/cumyl hydroperoxide system. The use of t-butyl hydroperoxide, as oxygen donor, leads to the formation of 2H-pyran-3(6H)-one derivatives.

A novel cyclization process of 2,3-bis(trimethylsilyl)buta-1,3-diene with various acyl chlorides in the presence of aluminium trichloride affords 2,5-disubstituted or 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans in short reaction time; a subsequent acylation process of the furan ring occurs if the reaction time is prolonged.
