Stability of benzotriazolyl-substituted phthalocyanines with respect to thermal oxidative decomposition

The thermal oxidative decomposition of benzotriazolyl-substituted phthalocyanines and their copper complexes is investigated by means of thermogravimetric, elemental, and spectroscopic analysis. It is shown that the nature of peripheral substituents exerts the greatest effect on the thermal stability of the compounds.

4-(1-Benzotriazolyl)-5-[1(2)-naphthyloxy]phthalodinitriles were obtained by nucleophilicsubstitution of bromine and nitro group in 4-bromo-5-nitrophthalodinitrile. These compounds were used for the synthesis of the corresponding octa-substituted phthalocyanines. Spectral data of the compounds obtained were examined.

Interaction of 4-(1-benzotriazolyl)-5-(2-naphthoxy)phthalonitrile with erbium or ytterbium chloride has afforded the lanthanide complexes of tetra-4-(1-benzotriazolyl)tetra-5-(2-naphthoxy)phthalocyanine. Fusion of erbium tetra-4-(1-benzotriazolyl)tetra-5-(2-naphthoxy)phthalocyaninate with phthalonitrile has yielded the corresponding sandwich-type heteroligand complex. The prepared compounds have been characterized by data of elemental analysis as well as IR and electronic spectroscopy; their thermal stability has been studied.

The interaction of benzotriazolyl derivatives of phthalodinitriles with copper(II) acetate was studied thermogravimetrically and spectroscopically. Electron acceptor properties of peripheral substituents had a predominant influence on the enthalpy parameter of formation of copper(II)phthalocyanines.
