A process for preparing a 3-(2-oxocyclohexyl)propionic ester comprising reacting a cyclohexanone or derivative thereof with an acrylic ester in the presence of an amine catalyst. The water content of the reaction system is adjusted to 0.1 to 1.4 moles per mole of the amine catalyst before commencement of the reaction.
