Abstract Attempted intramolecular allylcationcycloaddition of trienol 2a, which contains a conjugateddiene of Z-configuration, affords monocyclic trienes 3a,b, in contrast to related trienols known to produce [5,5]-bicyclic and/or [5,7]-bicyclic products. Intramolecular Hoffmann-Noyori reaction of acyclic trienol 6 permits direct entry to hydoazulenes 7a, b with modest diastereoselectivity. Cycloaddition precursor 6 is readily prepared from 1,5-pentanediol in seven steps.
