  Imidazoles of the formula: ##STR1## and their salts, wherein R.sub.1 is an optically substituted hydrocarbon, heterocyclic or thiol group; R.sub.2 is an amino or optionally substituted etherified hydroxyl group; R.sub.11 is a negative charge or alkyl group when R.sub.10 is N.sub.2 + or R.sub.11 is a hydrogen atom or alkyl group when R.sub.10 is N = N -- NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 where R.sub.3 is methyl or .beta.-chloroethyl and R.sub.4 is optionally substituted hydrocarbon. When R.sub.10 is N.sub.2 + the compounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of compounds wherein R.sub.10 is N=N-- NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 these latter compounds possessing anti-tumor and/or anti-microbial activity.
