The preparation and subsequent Wittig reaction of phosphonium salt 4, a useful synthon for the preparation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, are reported. Salt 4 is a key intermediate for the synthesis of ethyl ω-2H5-docosa-4,7,10,13,16,19-hexaenoate (3).
