  Both enantiomers of theobroxide, a potato micro-tuber inducing substance isolated from Lasiodiplodia theobromae, have been synthesized from a common chiral building block serving as a chiral equivalent of 1,4-dihydroxy-2,5-cyclohexadiene.   Starting from an enantiopure building-block serving as the chiral equivalent of 4-hydroxycyclohexa-2.5-dien-1-one, a diastereocontrolled synthesis of four cyclohexanoid butenolides has been investigated.   An enantioselective total synthesis of the novel natural product (+)-panepophenanthrin has been accomplished in which a biomimetic Diels–Alder dimerisation is a key step. The monomeric precursor 2 was assembled from the readily available Diels–Alder adduct of cyclopentadiene and p-benzoquinone through a short, simple sequence employing chemo- and stereoselective operations.
