    The invention relates to the field of the production of thermostable polymers. In particular, the invention relates to the production of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) having a solution intrinsic viscosity in concentrated H2SO4in the range of 0.72 to 1.09 cm3/g, characterized by a minimum number of structural defects in the macromolecular chain, the presence of which eventually leads to an increase in the melt viscosity of polymer under processing conditions. The invention discloses a method for preparing PEKK through the production of 1,3-bis(4-phenoxybenzoyl)benzene (1,3-EKKE) as an intermediate, and to a method for preparing said intermediate 1,3-EKKE.

    A moiety with the formula: A-X-Ar.sup.1 -O-Ar.sup.2 reacts in the presence of a catalyst with a moiety of the formula: B-Ar.sup.3 -O-Y to form a linkage of the formula: A-X-Ar.sup.1 -O-Ar.sup.3 -B+Ar.sup.2 -O-Y wherein Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2 and Ar.sup.3 are aromatic moieties, X is an activating group, Y is a hydrogen, a trihydrocarbylsilyl, a trihydrocarbyltin, or a carbonyl moiety, and the catalyst is a catalyst capable of abstracting the group Y from the second moiety. The reaction can be used to create a polyarylether polymer.

    Friedel Crafts preparation of arylene ether (especially arylene ether ketone) oligomers with an exceptionally high degree of isomeric purity and freedom from by-products can be achieved by adding to the Lewis acid reaction system a protic controlling agent selected from ROX, water, RCOOX, RSO₃X, and ROY, wherein R is organic, X is hydrogen or metal, and Y is metal. Contrary to conventional expectation, the protic agent does not significantly acylate or alkylate the Friedel Crafts reaction product, and controlling agents of relatively low molecular weight, e.g., benzoic acid, can surprisingly be selected to produce dispersions of the resulting oligomers.
