Cyano-containing pyrimidine derivatives represented by the general formula:
wherein X represents oxygen atom or sulfur atom,
R¹ represents halogen atom, C₁₋₄ alkyl, C₁₋₄ alkoxy, halogeno-C₁₋₄ alkyl or halogeno-C₁₋₄ alkoxy,
R² represents halogen atom, C₁₋₄ alkoxy, halogeno-C₁₋₄ alkyl or halogeno-C₁₋₄ alkoxy,
R³ represents C₁₋₄ alkyl or C₃₋₇ cycloalkyl substitutable with C₁₋₄ alkyl, and
R⁴ represents hydroxy, amino or oxo group,
as well as the use thereof as herbicidal agents.

The compounds according to the present invention exhibit an excellent herbicidal activity.
