    Provided are: a liquid crystal composite which is suited to dimming, and which contains a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one of characteristics including a high upper limit temperature, a low lower limit temperature, a low viscosity, a high optical anisotropy, and a high negative dielectric anisotropy, or having an appropriate balance between at least two of these characteristics; and a liquid crystal dimmer element having the liquid crystal composite. The liquid crystal composite comprises a polymer and a liquid crystal composition containing a specific compound having a high negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal composite may further comprise a specific compound having a high upper limit temperature or a low lower limit temperature.

    A nematic liquid crystal composition has negative dielectric anisotropy and contains at least one polar compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first additive, and the liquid crystal display device includes the composition. In formula (1), R1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons or the like; R2 is a group represented by —OH, —OR0, —NH2, —NHR0 or —N(R0)2, in which R0 is alkyl having 1 to 5 carbons; ring A and ring B are independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like; Z1 is a single bond or the like; Sp1 and Sp2 are independently a single bond, alkylene having 1 to 7 carbons or the like; and a is 0 to 4.

Upon manufacturing the liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates that have no alignment film and arranged to face each other, and including a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal compound and a polymerizable compound as a liquid crystal layer formed between the substrates formed of an electrode group formed on either one or both of surfaces faced by each of the pair of substrates, in which at least one of the polymerizable compounds is a compound having a polar anchor group, wherein the polymerizable compound is allowed to react under conditions of 10 or more in an accumulated light quantity ratio (313 nm/254 nm) at 254 nanometers and 313 nanometers to form an alignment control layer.
