    The present invention provides novel conformationally-defined macrocyclic compounds that have been demonstrated to be selective modulators of the ghrelin receptor (GRLN, growth hormone secretagogue receptor, GHS-R1a and subtypes, isoforms and/or variants thereof). Methods of synthesizing the novel compounds are also described herein. These compounds are useful as antagonists or inverse agonists of the ghrelin receptor and as medicaments for treatment and prevention of a range of medical conditions including, but not limited to, metabolic and/or endocrine disorders, obesity and obesity-associated disorders, appetite or eating disorders, addictive disorders, cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, genetic disorders, hyperproliferative disorders, central nervous system disorders and inflammatory disorders.

    Low molecular weight acetal, alcohol, O-acylated alcohol and ester compounds are identified that block the odor of specific carboxylic acids especially propionic acid, butyric acid, isovaleric acid 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid and hexanoic acid. These compounds exhibit surprisingly high odor blocking properties and are therefore useful additives to compositions such as: a) personal care products including underarm deodorant and antiperspirant, hair shampoo and conditioner, toilet soap, and skin lotion; b) fabric care products including laundry detergents, fabric conditioners, and fabric fresheners; c) pet care products including deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and d) home care products including air fresheners, carpet fresheners, surface cleaners and hand wash dish detergent.

    In a method of forming a semicrystalline polyetherimide, a solvent mixture is combined with an amorphous polyetherimide in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 50:1, respectively, to form a first dispersion. The solvent mixture includes dichloromethane and a C1-C6 alkanol in a weight ratio of 0.5:1 to 15:1, respectively. The first dispersion is agitated to form a second dispersion containing a semicrystalline polyetherimide, and the semicrystalline polyetherimide is isolated from the second dispersion. The isolated semicrystalline polyetherimide exhibits a melting point in a range of 230 to 300 °C. Also described is a composition that includes a polyetherimide, dichloromethane, and a C1-C6 alkanol in specific ratios.
