A base-catalyzed, one-pot and facile method for the synthesis of 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4-arylpyrano[3,2-b]indole-3-carbonitriles is reported. This procedure includes a novel three-component reaction of indolin-3-one with aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile in ethanol in the presence of ammonium acetate as the catalyst.
