This application relates to novel compounds of formula (I) (and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts), as defined herein, processes and intermediates for their preparation, pharmaceutical formulations comprising the novel compounds of formula (I), and the use of the compounds of formula (I) as thrombin inhibitors.
Reductive cross-coupling of aryl halides with ubiquitous alkyl tosylates was developed using a combination of nickel and vitamin B12 catalysts. The tosylate was activated by reduced vitamin B12 to form alkyl cobalt(III) which served as a good alkylating agent for aryl-nickel species, leading to the C(sp3)–C(sp2) bond formation.

Convergent paired metal electrocatalysis enables the direct use of simple primary and secondary aliphaticacids as coupling partners for C(sp2)−C(sp3) bond formation by radical decarboxylation. This new electrophotocatalytic method features a broad substrate scope, wide functional-group tolerance, and could be used for late-stage functionalization of complex molecules.
